Brainstorming

This is the brainstorming I did when we first received the brief for the exam. I tried to brainstorm as many different things that I could in order to get a wide selection.

3 STARTING POINTZ

After brainstorming, I wrote out 3 of my favourite ideas and elaborated them, writing what I could do for them in different forms, eg. patterns and leaflets.

conventions of the form - childrens books

I tried to list all of the conventions of children's books to help me get a clear idea of what they usually contained so I could make mine as realistic as possible.

Photo's of subject matter

These are all images I have collected of New York, which is the main location within my book. These are all to give me an idea of what it looks like and things to work on when creating my final piece.

drawings/doodles of subject matter

These are some drawings/doodles of the main character of the book, 'Terry'. I tried to draw what he might look like, and tried him in various positions and with different facial expressions.

I then went on to draw some different cars and taxis, as my book is about a taxi driver. I researched various cars and tried to replicate what they looked like.

Finally, I drew some of the potential locations/landmarks that the book could be held in.

examples of other peoples work

These books were all very influential whilst creating my final piece as they all demonstrate various conventions of the form. For example, most of them use short, simple sentences which are appropriate for the audience of their book which is children. I will use shorter sentences in my book because its for young children and it will stop them from becoming distracted. Also, I liked the simple drawings within some of the books, which I will try and emulate to a certain extent in my final piece.

drawings of peoples work who i like

I liked the ways that the artists drew these various characters so I copied them.

pattern stamp

For another experiment I did a pattern stamp. In my artist copy it there was a pattern on some parts, so I recreated the pattern in photoshop and went to Edit -> define pattern. This created the pattern which I could then paint where I want using the pattern stamp tool and it would show up.

This is the inital pattern I created.

This is where I painted on the pattern.

Flat plans

Firstly I did a flat plan for the book Funny Bones by Janet & Allan Ahlberg. As this is a childrens book I thought it would be helpful in seeing how they are laid out and created while at the same time showing some features that are within it and perhaps in other childrens books too.

Next I did a flat plan for the book that I was creating. I did all of the pages in the book and tried to take inspiration of certain elements for the flat plan I did for Funny Bones, for example, a similar number of pages. I also laid the pages out differently, for example on some I did full illustrations while in others there were boxes and text. This helped me to decide which pages I wanted to do for my final piece.

artist copy

This is the piece of work that I copied.

I then drew out the piece and went over it in ink.

I decided to colour a section of it and this is the end product.

Thumbnails

These are thumbnails for my book. I drew them out quite simply so I could get a vague idea of what I wanted to do. However, I didn't do all the pages in the book but I still drew them out.
